The visible things that come with a role or a way of life and announce it to everyone — the big office, the car, the title on the door, the robes, the bodyguards. Always plural, always with "the," and it points at the outward show rather than the substance. That is the heart of the word: when someone says "the trappings of power" or "the trappings of success," they are usually hinting that the show may be all there is. "He had all the trappings of wealth but was drowning in debt" is the most typical shape it takes. It can be used — the trappings of office simply meaning what comes with the job — but even then a faint dryness to it. It is a slightly formal, writerly word; you would meet it in a newspaper or a novel more often than in speech. There is an older, plainer sense too, still used: the cloth and gear put on a horse for a ceremony.
組成From trapping, from an old sense of trap meaning to dress up or decorate — nothing to do with catching animals. That trap came through French from a word for cloth or covering, which is why the horse-decoration sense is the oldest one.
