A short horizontal bar hung from two ropes, high in the air, that circus performers swing from and let go of to fly to another one. It is the classic circus apparatus — the trapeze artist swinging out over the crowd, the catcher hanging upside down by the knees, the moment where nobody is holding anything. "Flying trapeze" is the swinging, releasing kind; a "static trapeze" stays more or less still and the performer does shapes and holds on it. The word is also used loosely for the act itself: "she does trapeze" means she performs on one, and you can also say "she's a trapeze artist." Outside the circus, people reach for the image whenever they want to talk about a risky handover — a business writer might say a company is "on the trapeze," hanging between one thing and the next with nothing underneath. There is a small sailing use too: on a fast , the trapeze is a wire the crew hangs from to lean right out over the water.
組成From French trapèze, from Latin trapezium, from a Greek word meaning "little table" — because a four-sided shape with the bar, the two ropes, and the beam above looks like the four legs and top of a small table. The same Greek root gives us the maths word trapezium/trapezoid.
