A tracing is a copy you make by putting thin paper over a picture or a map and drawing along the lines you can see through it. The copy itself is the tracing — 'I made a tracing of the map'. The thin see-through paper for doing this has its own name, tracing paper, and that pairing is where most students meet the word. 'Tracing' is also just the -ing form of the verb 'trace', and 'trace' has several jobs, so the same shape turns up meaning quite different things: tracing a drawing (copying it), tracing a phone call (following it back to find where it came from), tracing your family history (following it back in time), contact tracing (finding everyone a sick person met). All of these share one picture — following a line back along itself. Only the first one gives you a physical object you can hold.
