1. 1

Toxicological is the adjective that goes with , the study of poisons. It describes anything belonging to that field: a toxicological report, a toxicological test, toxicological evidence, a toxicological examination. In practice it is almost always attached to work done in a laboratory or presented in court — after a sudden death, someone orders toxicological tests to find out what substances were in the person's body. It is a formal, technical, written word; nobody uses it in ordinary talk. One useful thing to notice is how English lets you choose: you can say 'a toxicological report' or 'a report', and both are correct. Everyday speech and news writing lean toward the shorter ' report'; scientific and legal writing keeps the longer toxicological. Be careful not to confuse it with 'toxic'. Toxic describes the poison itself — toxic waste, a toxic gas. Toxicological describes the study of poisons — so toxicological waste would be wrong, but a toxicological study of waste is right.

組成toxicology + -ical. The -ical ending is one of English's standard ways of turning a field of study into an adjective, the same way biology becomes biological and history becomes historical. Inside toxicology sits the Greek toxikon, 'poison'.
