A towrope is the rope, or sometimes a chain or a thick strap, that you use when one vehicle pulls another one along. The most common picture is a car that has broken down: someone hooks a towrope from the back of a working car to the front of the dead one, and slowly pulls it to a garage. But the word is used any time one thing pulls another through a rope like this — a boat pulling another boat, a tractor pulling a stuck car out of mud, and, very often, a ski slope, where a towrope is the moving rope that beginners hold onto to be pulled up the hill. You will also see it written as two words, tow rope, and both spellings are normal; British writing often prefers the two-word form. The word is plain and practical, not formal — a mechanic and a professor would both just say towrope. Note that the material does not really matter: people still say towrope even when the thing is a flat nylon strap with metal hooks on the ends, because the job is what names it, not the shape.
