Describing hair — or a whole person — that looks , as if it has been rubbed, slept on, or blown about. What makes it worth learning is that it is nearly always a kind word, or even an one. Messy hair sounds like a problem; tousled hair sounds attractive, natural, a bit sleepy, the look of someone who just got out of bed or came in off a beach. Fashion and film writing lean on it constantly: tousled beach , his tousled hair and crumpled shirt, a tousled boy. You can stretch it past hair to the person or their look — he arrived tousled and late — and it keeps that same forgiving, slightly romantic tone. Two , "TOW-zuld". Like the verb behind it, it belongs more to writing than to chat.
