A touchless machine works without your hand ever making contact with it. You wave your hand near it, or just come close, and a sensor does the rest: a touchless tap, a touchless soap dispenser, a touchless car wash, touchless payment. It is a fairly new word and it belongs to product descriptions, signs and advertising more than to conversation — a shop puts 'touchless entry' on the door, but a friend just says 'you don't have to touch it'. The word became very common around 2020, when not touching shared surfaces suddenly mattered to everyone, and it kept that hygiene flavour afterwards: touchless usually implies clean and safe, not merely convenient. One thing worth noticing is that 'touchless' and 'contactless' overlap but lean different ways. Contactless is the usual word for cards and phones you tap to pay — and notice you DO tap those, so 'contactless' there really means no chip inserted, not no contact at all. Touchless leans toward taps, doors, dispensers, and toward the promise that your hand meets nothing.
