Torremolinos is a seaside town in southern Spain, on the stretch of Mediterranean coast called the Costa del Sol, just west of the city of Málaga. It has long beaches, rows of tall concrete hotels built close together, and streets full of bars, cheap restaurants, and night clubs. The reason a learner's dictionary bothers to list it is that in Britain the name carries a whole meaning beyond the place. From the 1960s and 70s, Torremolinos was where ordinary British families went on a package holiday — one price covering flights, hotel, and often meals, booked from a shop on the high street. For many people it was the first time they had ever left the country. So when a British person says *Torremolinos*, they may be saying something about a kind of holiday: sun, cheap beer, a full English breakfast served in Spain, crowds, and not much interest in learning Spanish. That gives the name a slightly teasing tone in British English. It can be used the way we might use a place name here to mean "that sort of trip" — affectionate for some, a bit snobbish in others' mouths. A newspaper might write that somewhere "has been ruined, turned into another Torremolinos", meaning built up and full of tourists. Understand that tone before you use the name, because the town today is a perfectly pleasant place and Spaniards themselves holiday there. Americans mostly do not know the word at all. It belongs to British English and to British social history. Pronunciation is the other reason to look at it: five syllables, tor-re-mo-LEE-nos, with the stress on the LEE.
