    Topically is the adverb from topical, and it follows the adjective's two lives. In the news sense it means 'in a way that connects to what is happening now' — 'the sketch topically referred to last night's election'. Honestly, this use is not very common; writers usually find it and prefer to say 'a topical joke' rather than 'joked topically'. Where you really do meet the word is in medicine, where 'apply topically' means 'put it on the skin at the place that hurts, do not swallow it'. Those two words are printed on countless tubes of cream and ointment, and doctors and say them all the time — 'this is used topically', 'apply topically twice a day'. There is a third, quieter use meaning 'by subject': 'the essays are arranged topically rather than by date'. If you only remember one, remember the medicine one, because that is the one you will actually see.
