A topee is a light, hard hat with a wide brim, worn to keep the sun off your head and the back of your neck in very hot countries. It is usually white or pale brown, and made of something light like dried pith or cork, so it is stiff but not heavy. You also see it spelled 'topi', and most people today would call it a 'pith helmet' instead. The word feels old. It belongs to pictures from a hundred years ago: British soldiers and officials in India and Africa, explorers, big-game hunters, old adventure films. Almost nobody wears one now, and almost nobody says the word in normal talk. When it does come up today, it often carries a feeling of the colonial past with it — sometimes as a joke about someone who looks like an old-fashioned explorer. So this is a word to understand when you read it, not a word you will need to say.
