A topaz is a hard, clear stone used in jewellery. The one most people picture is a warm golden-yellow, and that is the colour the word carries — but real topaz also comes in blue, pink, brown, and colourless, and much of the bright blue topaz in shops is a pale stone that has been treated to change its colour. It is the birthstone linked to November, so you will see it in rings and necklaces sold for people born in that month. The word does a second job as a colour word. 'Topaz eyes', 'a topaz sky', 'topaz light' — writers use it for that yellow-gold, slightly transparent shade, the way they use 'emerald' for green. Used this way it sounds literary and a bit old-fashioned; you would not say it about your car. Note that topaz is not the same as citrine, another yellow stone often sold under the topaz name, and it is far less expensive than a diamond, though it is quite hard and scratches only with difficulty. The plural is 'topazes'. The word came into English from Old French topace, and before that from Ancient Greek τόπαζος (tópazos).
