Tonto is a character's name, not an ordinary word — that is why it takes a capital letter. He is the Native American companion of the Lone Ranger, a masked cowboy hero, in American radio, film and especially the 1950s television series. Tonto rides with the hero, saves him more than once, and calls him 'Kemo Sabe', a made-up phrase the show never really explained; American speakers still use 'Kemo Sabe' today as a joking way to address a close friend. Two things are worth knowing, because this is one of those names that carries history with it. First, for older Americans Tonto simply means loyal friend and , and 'the Lone Ranger and Tonto' is a set phrase for a pair who work as a team. Second, many people now see the character as an piece of the past: he was played by a non-Native actor, spoke in broken English of a kind real people do not speak, and stood one step behind the white hero. So writers today often mention Tonto in order to criticise that pattern — a smart character kept in the sidekick's place. The name has a sting in it that the show's makers did not intend: in Spanish, tonto means stupid.
