    British, and honestly not common any more: colours that tone in with each other look good together, they harmonize. 'The curtains tone in with the carpet.' You might meet it in older or formal British writing about homes and clothes. Most people today just say the colours 'go with' or 'match' each other. Always with 'with', no object.
