"Tonal" describes anything related to tone - the quality of a sound, a color, or the mood of a piece of writing or art. In music, a "tonal" piece has a clear key or main note that everything relates to (unlike "atonal" music, which avoids this on purpose). In painting, "tonal" differences are about how light or dark colors are, not their actual hue. In writing, a "tonal shift" means the mood or attitude suddenly changes.
