A tollway is a big fast road you have to pay to drive on. It is mainly American, and in the US it is quite regional — around Chicago and Dallas people say tollway all the time, and it even shows up in the names of real roads, like the Dallas North Tollway. Elsewhere you will hear toll road, turnpike (in the northeastern US), or in Britain simply a toll motorway, since paid motorways are rare there. The idea behind all of them is the same: the road cost a lot to build, so drivers pay each time instead of everyone paying through taxes. Taiwan's 國道 works this way too, though we would normally call it a freeway or expressway in English and just mention that there are tolls. A tollway is always a large road built for speed — you would not call a small paid bridge or a mountain lane a tollway.
