TOEIC is a test of everyday workplace English for people whose first language is not English. The letters stand for Test of English for International Communication, and people say it as a word, 'TOE-ick'. Like TOEFL, it is made by ETS, but it points at a completely different world: not lectures and essays, but meetings, emails, phone calls, travel plans, invoices, and office small talk. The classic version is a two-hour Listening and Reading test, all multiple choice, scored from 10 to 990. Speaking and Writing are a separate test that far fewer people take. TOEIC matters enormously in East Asia — in Taiwan, Japan, and Korea especially. Taiwanese companies list a TOEIC score in job advertisements, universities set a score as a graduation requirement, and many workers take it again and again to push their number up for a promotion. Outside this region, it is much less famous; a European or American employer may never have heard of it. That regional fact is worth knowing before you assume a score travels everywhere. Because the test is multiple choice and covers predictable business situations, it rewards preparation and test technique heavily, and a high TOEIC score does not always mean someone can hold a fluent conversation — a gap Taiwanese learners feel keenly and talk about often.
