Tobogganing is the winter activity of riding down a snowy hill on a toboggan — a long, flat sled with the front end curved up, and usually no runners underneath, so the whole board slides on the snow. You sit or lie on it, push off at the top, and go down fast. People do it for fun, and it is also a proper sport with steep icy tracks and timed runs. The word is the -ing form of the verb toboggan, and it works both as the action ('we went tobogganing') and as the name of the activity ('tobogganing is popular here'). The most common shape by far is 'go tobogganing', matching 'go swimming' and 'go fishing'. Which word people use depends on where they live: Canadians say tobogganing, British speakers usually say sledging, and Americans usually say sledding — often for the same afternoon on the same hill. The word itself came into English from a language of the Mi'kmaq people of eastern Canada, through Canadian French, which is why it feels so tied to Canada.
