Toad-in-the-hole is a British home-cooked dish: sausages baked inside a thick batter of eggs, milk and flour. The batter puffs up tall and golden in the hot oven while the sausages sit half-buried in it, and the brown ends poking through are supposedly the 'toads' looking out of their 'holes' — nobody is quite sure whether that is the real reason for the name, but it is the story everyone tells.
Toad-in-the-hole是 a British home-cooked dish一道英國家常菜: sausages把香腸 baked inside a thick batter of eggs, milk and flour烤進用蛋、牛奶和麵粉做成的濃麵糊裡. In the hot oven在熱烤箱裡 the batter麵糊 puffs up tall and golden烤得又高又金黃, while同時 the sausages香腸 sit half-buried in it半埋在裡面, and而 the brown ends poking through露出來的棕色尾端 are supposedly the 'toads' looking out of their 'holes'據說就是探出「洞」外張望的「蟾蜍」 — nobody is quite sure沒有人很確定 whether that is the real reason for the name這是不是命名的真正原因, but但 it is the story everyone tells這就是大家常講的故事
It is cheap, filling, family food, usually eaten in the evening with gravy and vegetables, and it belongs to cold weather.
It這 is cheap, filling, family food是便宜、飽足的家庭食物, usually通常 in the evening晚上 with gravy and vegetables配肉汁和蔬菜 eaten吃, and而且 it belongs to cold weather是冷天吃的東西
The batter is the same mixture used for Yorkshire pudding, so if you know that, you already know half the recipe.
The batter這麵糊 is the same mixture used for Yorkshire pudding跟做約克夏布丁用的是同一種, so所以 if you know that如果你知道那個, you already know half the recipe就已經懂一半的食譜了
The name is always written with and used as one uncountable thing: we had toad-in-the-hole, not 'a toad in the hole'. It is well known across Britain and almost unknown elsewhere, so outside Britain you may need to explain it — and be ready for the first reaction, because people who have never met it genuinely wonder whether there is an animal in there.
The name這名字 is always written with hyphens一律用連字號寫 and而且 used as one uncountable thing當成不可數的東西用: we had toad-in-the-hole我們會說we had toad-in-the-hole, not不是 'a toad in the hole''a toad in the hole'. It這道菜 is well known across Britain在英國家喻戶曉 and但 almost unknown elsewhere在其他地方幾乎沒人聽過, so所以 outside Britain在英國以外 you may need to explain it你可能得解釋一下 — and也要 be ready for the first reaction有心理準備面對第一反應, because因為 people who have never met it沒見過這道菜的人 genuinely wonder真的會懷疑 whether there is an animal in there裡面是不是有動物
組成A picture-name, not a recipe: 'toad' + 'in the hole', from the sausage ends showing through holes in the risen batter, like toads peeping out.
