TiVo is the brand name of a machine and service, sold from 1999 in the United States, that records television programmes onto a hard disk instead of onto tape. It let people pause live television, skip the advertisements, and tell the box to record every episode of a show automatically — all normal now, all new then. Because it came first and was popular, Americans began using the name for the act itself: 'I'll TiVo it' means 'I'll record it', even on a different brand of machine. That is how a brand becomes a verb, the way people say Google for searching. Two things to know: it is mainly American, and it now sounds dated — the streaming services took over, and younger speakers say record it or just watch it later.
