To titter is to laugh in a small, quiet, high way — the kind of laugh that escapes you when you did not really want to laugh. It is not a big happy laugh. It is the laugh of someone who is nervous, or , or trying to be polite, or trying not to laugh at all and failing. A student who is asked a question in front of the class and does not know the answer may titter. People in an audience titter when a speaker says something a little rude or a little strange — quiet, short, and half hidden. Because of that, the word carries a feeling: a titter is usually a bit childish, or a bit , or a bit uncomfortable. Nobody titters at a joke they truly love; for that we say laugh, , chuckle, or roar. It is also a noun: 'a titter went round the room' means a small wave of quiet laughing passed through the people there. You will meet it far more often in books and news writing than in daily speech — it is a writer's word for a very particular small sound.
