Tinted means something clear has a little colour added to it, so it is still see-through but not perfectly clear. We say it most often about glass: tinted car windows, tinted sunglasses, the tinted glass in an office building. The colour is usually light — grey, brown, green, blue — and the point is often practical: to cut the sun, to stop heat, or to stop people seeing in. Notice the 'a little' part. If glass is painted white so you cannot see through it at all, that is not tinted; that is frosted or opaque. Tinted keeps the seeing-through and only changes the colour of the light. The word also works outside glass. Hair can be tinted, which means a soft colour was added, not a full dye job — a hairdresser will often use tinted to mean gentler than 'dyed'. A face cream can be tinted (tinted moisturiser is a common product), meaning it carries a light colour. And writers use it for light too: 'the sky was tinted pink'. There is one more use worth knowing, because it is not about colour at all. If you say someone's view of the past is tinted, or 'rose-tinted', you mean their feelings have coloured what they see — they remember it prettier than it was. 'He looks at his school days through rose-tinted glasses.' That phrase is very common in British English. Grammatically, tinted is nearly always used before a noun (tinted windows) or after 'be' (the windows are tinted). It comes from the verb 'tint', but the verb is much rarer than this -ed form; most people meet the word as tinted first and may never use 'to tint' at all.
