Ting is the short, high, bright ringing sound of a small piece of metal or glass being struck — a spoon tapped against a wine glass, a tiny bell, a bicycle bell, the sound an old cash register or a lift makes when the doors open. The word is the sound itself: English has a whole family of these, and they are sorted by size. Ting is the smallest and highest; ding is a little bigger; dong and are big and low. You use it two ways. As a noun: 'there was a ting from the kitchen'. As a verb: 'she tinged her glass with a spoon' — though many people avoid that verb because the past tense looks odd, and say 'tapped' or 'chimed' instead. It also works on its own as an in comics and stories: Ting! You mostly find it in writing for children, in stories and in playful speech, not in serious or formal English. Note that in some Caribbean and British youth speech 'ting' is a completely different word, a pronunciation of 'thing' — that is not this word.
