    Tinder is the very dry, light stuff you light first when you make a fire — dry grass, thin bark, wood , paper, dead pine needles. It catches a spark straight away and burns fast and hot, and its whole job is to pass the flame on to bigger sticks. Fire-making is usually taught in three steps: tinder, then (small sticks), then fuel (logs). So tinder and are not the same thing, though people mix them up. The word is uncountable — 'some tinder', 'a piece of tinder', never 'a tinder'. Outside camping, the common use is a picture: something ready to explode into trouble is described as tinder, and a tense situation is 'a tinder box' waiting for a spark. 'Tinder-dry' is a set phrase you hear every summer in news about forest . And of course there is the dating app named Tinder — named for exactly this idea, the small spark that starts something — so young students often meet the app before the word.

組成An old native English word: Old English tynder, from a Germanic root meaning 'to kindle, to set alight'. Its relatives are still alive in German Zunder and Swedish tända, 'to light'. It has meant this same thing for well over a thousand years.
