  1. 1手鼓、鈴鼓（＝tambourine 的古語，聖經和詩歌裡才會看到；現在講樂器一律說 tambourine）。

    A tambourine — a small hand drum with a skin stretched over a round frame, often with little metal discs round the edge that jingle when you shake or hit it. The thing itself is ordinary; the word is not. Timbrel is old, and today you meet it almost only in the Bible and in poetry and hymns — Miriam takes a timbrel in her hand, people praise God with timbrel and dance. If you saw one in a shop today you would call it a tambourine. So treat timbrel as a reading word: know it when you see it, but do not use it to talk about a modern band.

組成A 'little timbre': Old French timbre (a drum) plus the small-making ending -el. Behind it is Latin tympanum, a drum.
