Tikrit is a city in Iraq, sitting on the river about 150 north-west of Baghdad. It is known outside Iraq for one reason: it was Saddam Hussein's home town. Many of the people around him in his government and army came from Tikrit and the families near it, so during his years in power the name of the town stood, in news reports, for the whole inner circle of his rule. That is why English speakers of a certain age recognise the name at all. In December 2003, after the American invasion, Saddam Hussein was found hiding in a hole near Ad Dawr, a small place close to Tikrit, and the town was in the news again. It was fought over once more in 2015, when Iraqi forces took it back from ISIS. So the name carries war with it — if it appears in an English text, the subject is almost certainly Iraqi or one of these conflicts. Say it tik-REET.
組成The English spelling comes through Ottoman Turkish Tikrit, from the Arabic name تِكْرِيت (Tikrīt). The town itself is far older than either language's record of it.
