組成A name borrowed into English from Persian تبت (tabbat/tubbat), probably going back to Old Turkic Töpüt, meaning something like 'the mountainous place, the heights'. One suggestion traces it further to Tibetan stod bod, 'Upper Tibet' — stod 'upper, high' + bod 'Tibet'. Scholars do not fully agree, but every proposal points at height.
