組成Borrowed from New Latin thyreoīdēs, from Ancient Greek θυρεοειδής (thureoeidēs) "shield-shaped" — from θυρεός (thureos), a large door-shaped shield, plus -ειδής (-eidēs) "looking like". The shield word itself comes from θύρα (thura) "door", because the shield was the size and shape of a doorway. So the name says nothing about what the organ does — it was named for the shield-shaped cartilage in the neck it sits behind.
