A thruster is a small engine on a spacecraft, a rocket, or a submarine that shoots gas (or water) out in one direction so the vehicle moves in the other direction. That is the whole idea: push something out one way, and you go the other way. The big main engine gets the spacecraft off the ground; the thrusters are the small ones that do the careful work after that — turning the ship a little, tipping it up or down, holding it steady, moving it gently toward the space station. Ships and boats have them too: a 'bow thruster' is a small near the front that pushes the front of a big ship sideways when it is coming into port, where a normal would be useless. The word is a plain job word: thrust (push) + -er (the thing that does it), so a thruster is 'the pusher'. Anyone reading about space understands it immediately. There is a second, quite separate meaning your students may meet online: in surfing, a thruster is a with three fins. That name comes from one man, Simon Anderson, who invented the design in 1980 — he never registered the name, so everyone just started using it for any three-fin board. And in the gym, a 'thruster' is an exercise where you squat down and push a weight up over your head.
