To thrum is to make a low, steady, repeating sound — the kind of sound that keeps going and that you feel a little in your body as well as hear. An engine thrums. A big machine in a factory thrums. Rain on a metal roof thrums. Sometimes a person thrums too: you thrum your fingers on a table when you are waiting and a bit impatient, tapping again and again. The word also works with a guitar — to thrum the strings is to play them in a rough, repeated way, not carefully. The sound of the word IS the meaning: 'thrum' sounds like the thing it names, which is why it feels right even to people who have never seen it written. This is a writer's word more than a talking word. In real speech people say 'hum' or 'the engine was making a low sound'. In a novel, though, thrum is everywhere — writers love it because it carries a feeling: something powerful is alive and working nearby. There is a stretched use too: 'the city thrummed with life', 'she thrummed with excitement'. Here nothing is really making a sound at all; the writer means the place or the person is full of energy that you can almost feel. A thrum can also be a noun — 'the thrum of the engine', 'a low thrum in the walls'.
