A throughway is a wide, fast road built for traffic to pass straight through, without small or traffic lights stopping it — what British speakers would call a and what Americans more usually call a freeway or an expressway. It is an American word, and it is not the common one: you will meet the spelling 'thruway' far more often, especially in road names, and the most famous is the New York State Thruway. Some thruways are toll roads, so in American English the word can carry a hint of 'you pay to drive on it', though not always. The word also gets used more loosely for any passage that lets you go straight through a place instead of stopping in it. For your own writing, '' or 'highway' will be understood everywhere; keep throughway for reading.
