Throughput is how much gets all the way through a system in a given time — how many goods a factory finishes in a day, how many patients a clinic sees in a week, how much data a network carries in a second. The key idea is 'through': not how much went in, and not how much is sitting inside waiting, but how much came out the other end. That is why managers and engineers like the word — a factory can be very busy and still have poor throughput, because being busy is not the same as finishing things. You meet it in business, manufacturing, computing and logistics. In computing it is especially common for networks and disks, where people also loosely call it 'speed', though throughput and speed are not quite the same thing. It is an uncountable noun: high throughput, low throughput, not 'a throughput' or 'throughputs'. It is a work word — clear, slightly technical, and you would not use it about your own life.

組成through（通過）+ put（放、送）— the amount put through. It was made on the pattern of input and output, which is why the three words feel like a set.
