A throaty sound is low, deep and a bit rough — it sounds like it is coming from deep inside the throat, not from the front of the mouth. We use it for a laugh, a cough, a voice, a whisper, a growl. A throaty voice is often warm and attractive: singers are described this way, and so are people who have just woken up, or who smoke, or who have a cold. So the word is usually a compliment when it is about a voice, and just a description when it is about a cough. People also use it for engines and machines — a throaty roar from a motorbike or a sports car means a deep, powerful, growling sound, and car lovers say it with pleasure. A sore throat and a throaty voice are different things, though a sore throat can give you one for a few days.
