To thresh is to beat cut grain — wheat, rice, — so that the seeds fall away from the stalks and husks. It is a farming word, one of the oldest jobs there is. In the past you did it by hand with a flail (two sticks joined by a chain), swinging it down on the crop laid out on a hard floor; now a machine does it, which is why a combine harvester both cuts and threshes. The step after threshing is , where you throw the mixture up so the wind blows the light chaff away and the heavy grain drops back down. Because the work is so physical, the word carries a feel of hard repeated beating. It is closely tied to "thrash," which is really the same old word gone down a second road: thrash means to beat a person or thing hard, or to move about wildly (a fish thrashing in the net). Keep thresh for grain and thrash for beating, and you will be right almost every time.
