1. 1

A woman's name from a very old story — the girl who loved Pyramus. It is a name, so it does not really 'mean' anything; what you need is the story, because English writers point back to it all the time. Thisbe and Pyramus lived next door to each other in Babylon and loved each other, but their families would not allow it, so they whispered through a crack in the wall between the houses. They agreed to meet outside the city one night. Thisbe arrived first, a lion came, she ran and dropped her scarf, and the lion tore it with a bloody mouth. Pyramus arrived, saw the torn bloody scarf, believed she was dead, and killed himself. Thisbe came back, found him, and killed herself too. The Roman poet Ovid wrote it down about two thousand years ago. Why does this matter for your English? Because Shakespeare used the same shape of story in 'Romeo and Juliet' — two young lovers, families who refuse, a message that goes wrong, both dead — and he also put Pyramus and Thisbe into 'A Night's Dream' as a play inside the play, done so badly that it is funny. So if you read 'a Pyramus and Thisbe story', or someone calls a couple 'Pyramus and Thisbe', they mean: young lovers kept apart, and it will end badly. You will meet this word in literature classes and in old poems, almost nowhere else.

組成A name from Greek, Θίσβη (Thisbē). It is also the name of a small town in Greece. Names like this usually have no meaning we can take apart — they are just names, and the story is what carries the weight.
