Thinning hair is hair that is slowly getting less thick — you still have hair, but there is less of it, so more scalp shows through. This is the gentle way to say it in English. 'Going bald' is blunt and can someone; 'thinning' describes the same process without landing so hard, which is why you hear it from , in advertisements for shampoo, and from people talking carefully about themselves or a friend. It almost always sits right in front of the noun: thinning hair, a thinning patch, thinning on top. You would not usually say 'his hair is thinning' — actually you would, and often; both the before-the-noun use and the is-thinning use are normal here. Beyond hair, the same -ing form works for anything that is getting less dense: a thinning crowd as people go home, thinning ice at the end of winter, a thinning forest. And use thinning as a noun for the job of pulling out some young plants so the rest have room to grow.

組成thin + -ing. Thin can be a verb as well as a describing word — to thin is to become less thick — and -ing turns it into the form that describes something in the middle of doing that. Note the doubled n before -ing, as in running and winning.
