The short form of "they have." Important limit: it is only used when "have" is a verb, building the perfect tense — They've finished; They've been to Japan; They've been waiting an hour. When "have" means to own or possess, English does not contract it in normal use: you say They have three children, not They've three children. (You may meet the second in older British books or poetry; it is not how people talk now.) Beyond that it behaves like all the "they" forms — people, animals, things, and the single person of unknown gender: Someone rang, but they've hung up. It is the ordinary spoken choice; the full "they have" in speech usually signals emphasis or formality. Pronounced as one syllable, with a clear v sound at the end.
組成they + 've, what remains of have after ha- falls away, with the apostrophe marking the missing letters. Same pattern in I've, you've, we've.
