A hero in ancient Greek stories, the great hero of the city of Athens — the way Hercules belongs to Greece as a whole. He is best known for sailing to and killing the , the monster with a bull's head that lived in the Labyrinth, a maze no one could escape. He got out again because the king's daughter Ariadne gave him a ball of thread to unwind as he walked in. Later stories also tie him to Hippolyta, queen of the Amazons. In English the name comes up in three places: in myth and children's story books; in Shakespeare, where Theseus is the duke in A Night's Dream; and in the famous puzzle called the Ship of Theseus — if you replace every plank of a ship one by one, is it still the same ship? People use that phrase in ordinary arguments about identity and change. The usual English pronunciation is roughly THEE-see-us.
組成From Ancient Greek Θησεύς (Thēseús). The name is thought to come from the same root as θεσμός (thesmós), 'institution, law laid down' — fitting for a hero remembered as the founder of the Athenian state.
