  1. 1破傷風。打針就是「破傷風疫苗／破傷風針」；台灣兒童常規接種裡就有，成人被生鏽的東西刺傷時醫生會問要不要補打。英文口語裡最常出現的其實是 tetanus shot（打針）而不是講這個病本身。

    Tetanus is a serious illness caused by bacteria that live in soil, dust and animal waste and get into the body through a cut — a deep one from a dirty nail, but any wound can do it. The bacteria release a poison that makes the muscles pull tight and stay tight. The jaw is often hit first, which is why the illness has the everyday name : the person cannot open their mouth. It can kill, and it needs hospital treatment. In Taiwan, children get the vaccine as part of the normal childhood schedule, and adults are usually told to have a booster every ten years or after a dirty wound — so if you cut yourself badly here, the doctor's first question is often when you last had a tetanus shot. The word is uncountable: 'he got tetanus', never 'a tetanus'. In everyday English the commonest use is not about the disease at all but about the injection — 'I need a tetanus jab' (British) or 'a tetanus shot' (American).

組成From Latin tetanus, from Ancient Greek tetanos, which came from the verb teino, 'to stretch'. The name is a description of what the doctor sees: muscles stretched tight and locked. Understanding that one root makes the disease easy to remember — it is the 'stretching-tight' illness.
