Testosterone is the main male sex hormone — a chemical the body makes, mostly in the , that causes the changes we think of as male: a deeper voice, facial and body hair, bigger muscles, and the ability to make sperm. Women's bodies make it too, in much smaller amounts, and need it. It is a scientific word, but ordinary people use it easily now, partly because of sport (athletes are tested for it, and taking extra is cheating) and partly because of health talk (older men are told their levels drop with age).
Testosterone是 the main male sex hormone主要的男性性荷爾蒙—— a chemical the body makes身體自己製造的化學物質, mostly主要 in the testes在睪丸, that causes造成 the changes we think of as male我們認為是男性特徵的那些變化: a deeper voice聲音變低、 facial and body hair長出臉部和身體的毛髮、 bigger muscles肌肉變大、 and還有 the ability to make sperm製造精子的能力。 Women's bodies女性的身體 make it too也會製造它, in much smaller amounts只是量少很多, and而且 need it也需要它。 It這 is a scientific word是一個科學用詞, but但 ordinary people一般人 use it easily now現在也很自然地在用, partly because of sport一部分是因為運動 (athletes are tested for it選手會被驗這個, and taking extra is cheating多用就算作弊) and partly because of health talk一部分是因為健康話題 (older men are told their levels drop with age老人家會被告知年紀大了濃度會下降)。
There is a second, looser use you should recognise. People say testosterone to mean aggressive male energy, usually with a raised : 'There was a lot of testosterone in that room', 'the film is pure testosterone'. That is a comment on behaviour — loud, competitive, showing off — not a claim about anyone's blood. Journalists especially like this use.
There is還有 a second, looser use第二種比較鬆散的用法, you should recognise你應該要認得。 People人們 say testosterone會用testosterone to mean來指 aggressive male energy好鬥的男性氣息, usually通常 with a raised eyebrow帶點揶揄的口氣: 'There was a lot of testosterone in that room'「There was a lot of testosterone in that room」、 'the film is pure testosterone'「the film is pure testosterone」。 That這 is a comment on behaviour是在講行為—— loud, competitive, showing off大聲、好競爭、愛show——, not a claim about anyone's blood不是在講誰的血液。 Journalists especially記者特別 like this use喜歡這種用法。
It is uncountable: say 'testosterone', 'high testosterone', 'a testosterone level', but never 'a testosterone'. Stress the third syllable: te-STOS-te-rone.
It這 is uncountable是不可數名詞: say可以說 'testosterone'「testosterone」、 'high testosterone'「high testosterone」、 'a testosterone level'「a testosterone level」, but但 never 'a testosterone'絕對不要說「a testosterone」。 Stress重音放在 the third syllable第三音節: te-STOS-te-rone te-STOS-te-rone。
組成test(is) + -o- + -sterone. The first piece is Latin testis, the testes, where the hormone is mainly made. The ending -sterone means 'steroid hormone', and it was pulled out of words like cholesterol and ketone: the -ster- part traces back to Ancient Greek stereos, 'solid', and the -one is the chemists' ending for a certain kind of compound. So the name is a chemist's label, read almost literally as 'the steroid hormone from the testes'.
同家族的字

- cholesterolshares the -ster- piece; both are steroids, and the body actually builds testosterone out of cholesterol
- stereoshares the Greek stereos, 'solid' — a stereo gives sound that feels solid and three-dimensional
