Tessellated describes a surface made of many small flat pieces — usually tiles or bits of coloured stone — fitted together so they cover the whole area with no gaps, forming a pattern. You see it most often about floors: a tessellated floor in an old church, a hotel entrance, a Roman villa. It is a fairly formal, slightly word; a builder in everyday talk would just say 'tiled'. Maths and art also use it: in maths, shapes tessellate when copies of them fit together perfectly and with no space left over — do, circles do not. The artist M. C. Escher is famous for tessellated drawings of birds and fish. So the word carries two ideas at once: small repeated pieces, and a perfect fit.

組成From Latin tessella, a little square tile, which is the small form of tessera, a square block used in Roman mosaics. The '-ated' ending makes it a describing word meaning 'made in that way'.
