The adverb of terse: it describes HOW someone says or writes something. If you answer tersely, you answer in very few words, and the shortness usually shows feeling — annoyance, impatience, coldness, or a decision not to explain yourself. It sits most often right beside a speaking verb: replied tersely, said tersely, answered tersely, wrote tersely. You will meet it most in stories and news reports, where the writer wants you to hear the tone without spelling out the emotion — "'No,' he said tersely" tells you he is not happy, without the writer having to say so. Like terse, it keeps a smaller, approving use in writing about writing: an author who puts things tersely puts them cleanly, with no wasted words. But in ordinary use, expect the cool, clipped feeling.
