Terrycloth is the thick, soft cotton cloth that towels are made of. Its surface is covered with tiny loops of thread standing up on one side or both, and those loops are the whole point: they hold a lot of water, so the cloth dries your skin quickly. Besides towels, it is used for bathrobes, baby bibs, beach cover-ups, sweatbands, and — as a fashion look that returns every few years — casual shorts and tops. In writing you will see it as one word 'terrycloth', two words 'terry cloth', or with a hyphen; all three are used, and none is wrong. People often shorten it to just 'terry', especially before another noun: a terry towel, terry robe. It is a plain, practical word, at home in shops and product labels rather than in conversation.
