1. 1

Happening once each school term. A British school year is usually cut into three terms, so a 'termly report' arrives three times a year, and a 'termly meeting' happens three times a year. The word works two ways, and the form does not change. As an adjective it sits before a noun: 'a termly newsletter', 'the termly fee', 'termly assessments'. As an adverb it comes after the verb: 'Parents are invited in termly.' 'The committee meets termly.' It fits the same family as 'daily', 'weekly', 'monthly', 'yearly' — all of them do this double job. It is a narrow, institutional word. You meet it in letters from schools, in university handbooks, in fee schedules — the language of an office writing to parents or students. People almost never say it in conversation; a parent would say 'we get a report every term'. It is also strongly British, because it depends on the British three-term year. In America, universities run on semesters and would say 'each semester'. So: understand it when a school it to you, and use it if you are writing that kind of letter yourself. Otherwise 'every term' is the natural thing to say.

    每學期一次的(英式學制一學年三學期)。台灣一學年是兩個學期,所以沒有完全對應的字,日常會說「每學期」「一學期一次」。學校公文裡的 termly report 就是「每學期的成績單/報告」。

組成term(學期)+ -ly。-ly 接在時間名詞後面時,意思是「每隔這麼久一次」——就像 day → daily、week → weekly、month → monthly。這個 -ly 跟形容詞變副詞的 -ly(quick → quickly)長得一樣,但工作不同。

同家族的字

  • weeklysame time-noun + -ly pattern: once every week
  • monthlysame time-noun + -ly pattern: once every month
  • termthe noun it is built on
