A state in the southeastern United States — long and thin on the map, running east to west, with mountains at one end and flat at the other. Its main cities are Nashville (the capital), Memphis, and Knoxville. Two things make it come up in English constantly, and neither is . The first is music: Nashville is the home of country music, and Memphis is where blues and rock and roll grew, so the state's name carries a musical feeling for English speakers that a plain geography lesson would miss. Elvis Presley's house, Graceland, is in Memphis. The second is Jack Daniel's whiskey, which is legally called Tennessee whiskey. The state has both industry — coal, chemicals — and farming, with cotton and tobacco. In writing it is often to TN. When an English speaker says the name, they may well be reaching for the music or the countryside feeling, not just the location.
組成From the Cherokee word ᏔᎾᏏ (tanasi), the name of a Cherokee village on a river. People generally believe it meant something like "winding river," though that reading is not certain. Many US state names come from Native American languages this way.
