A tendon is a tough, rope-like band inside your body that joins a muscle to a bone. When the muscle pulls, the tendon passes that pull on to the bone, and the bone moves — so a tendon is the cable in the machine. You can feel one on yourself right now: the thick cord at the back of your ankle, above the heel, is the Achilles tendon, the biggest in the body. The word is everyday enough that ordinary people use it about injuries — 'I tore a tendon playing basketball' — while doctors use it in the same plain way, so it sits comfortably in both medical and casual speech. often mix up three body words. A tendon joins muscle to bone. A ligament joins bone to bone, holding a joint together. A nerve carries signals. Athletes get all three and the news reports them differently, so the distinction is worth fixing in your memory. Two more things you meet in real life: tendonitis (also spelled tendinitis) is when a tendon becomes swollen and painful from doing the same movement too many times, and it is very common in office workers and players of sports. And in cooking, the white parts of beef that love in 牛筋 are tendons — so 'beef tendon' on an English menu is exactly what you think it is.
