A template is a pattern or shape you use as a guide so that copies come out the same — a shape cut from cardboard that you trace around to cut the same shape from fabric, for example. Much more commonly today, it means a ready-made document or file with the basic structure already set up, so you don't start from a blank page — a résumé template, an email template, a website template — that you then fill in with your own details.
