A meeting in which people who are in different places talk to each other at the same time, using the telephone, or video and computers.

One way to hold this word: a meeting where the chairs are in different cities. The people are apart — three offices, three islands, three time zones — but a line is open between them, so when one person speaks the others hear it at that moment. The line may carry only voices, or faces as well. Take away the shared room, keep the shared moment: that is what the word is for.
teleconference 的核心畫面可以想成：一場會議，椅子卻散在不同城市。人不在一起——可能三個辦公室、三座城市、甚至三個時區——但中間有一條線接著，所以一個人開口，其他人當下就聽得到。這條線可能只送聲音，也可能連臉一起送過來。把「同一個房間」拿掉，把「同一個當下」留著，這個字就是為那種場面造的。tele- 這個開頭在 telephone、television 裡也是同一個意思：從遠方傳過來。

A contraction of 'telephone conference'; by surface analysis tele- ('at a distance') + conference. The distance is written into the front of the word.
