In Britain, a small flat round bread roll with dried fruit in it — or currants — and often a little sugar and spice. You cut it in half, toast it, put butter on it while it is hot, and eat it with tea in the afternoon. It is bread more than cake, in spite of the name, so it is not sweet the way a birthday cake is. What makes it worth knowing is that the word means different things in different places. In parts of the north of England it can mean a plain bread roll with no fruit at all — ask for a teacake in Yorkshire and you may get a sandwich bun. In Scotland a tunnock's teacake is something else again: a chocolate-covered dome of marshmallow on a . In the American South, teacakes are soft plain sugar cookies.
