Taupe is a colour: a soft grey-brown, somewhere between grey and , quiet and never bright. It works as a noun ('the walls are painted taupe') and as an adjective ('a taupe handbag'). This is a word from the world of design — interior , fashion, cosmetics, paint charts. An ordinary person describing a wall would just say ' brown'; a designer, a shop assistant, or a makeup label says taupe. Because it sounds refined, it is also used to make plain colours sound expensive. Be aware that people do not fully agree on where taupe ends and or greige begins — ask three people to point at taupe and you may get three slightly different shades. One more thing worth knowing: it is pronounced like 'tope', one syllable, rhyming with 'hope' — not 'tow-pay'.
組成Borrowed whole from French taupe, which means 'mole' — the small animal that lives underground. The colour is named after the animal's grey-brown fur. The French word goes back to Latin talpa, also 'mole'.
