Tatting is a kind of lace made by hand, and also the act of making it. You make it with a small shuttle and thread, tying a long line of tiny knots that form rings and loops. The result is a firm, slightly stiff lace — you see it as an on handkerchiefs, collars, table cloths and gowns, especially old ones. It was a popular home craft in the nineteenth and early twentieth century; today it is a hobby craft that a few people still love. The word works both ways: 'this collar is tatting' (the lace) and 'my grandmother was tatting all evening' (the activity). Note that it is a different craft from crochet and from — different tool, different structure.

組成Origin unknown. The noun is recorded first, from about the middle of the 1800s, and the verb 'to tat' came afterwards from the noun — so the craft was named before anyone spoke of doing it.
